BATON ROUGE, La. – With 10 days of work in the books, LSU will step away from spring drills for 12 days to give players time off for spring break.
In advance of the respite, Les Miles sent his team through an abbreviated scrimmage Thursday. Here are some notes and quotes.
* Miles said the scrimmage itself was “no more than about 30 minutes” and was integrated into a normal practice.
* Star running back Leonard Fournette was back in action after he sat out a workout earlier in the week and began the scrimmage with a 50-yard burst.
* Senior linebacker Duke Riley, senior defensive tackle Christian LaCouture and sophomore defensive end Arden Key drew praise from Miles.
* Senior linebacker Kendell Beckwith stayed on the sideline, as he has since suffering a knee strain last week. “Kendell could have played,” Miles said. “He’ll take spring break, and then come back and be fine for the remainder of the spring.”
* With Beckwith on the shelf, Miles said Riley and true freshman Devin White are leading the way in the linebacker corps.
* For what it’s worth, Miles continues to preach a mantra that the LSU offense is throwing the ball plenty in spring practice. Both veteran quarterbacks – Brandon Harris and Danny Etling – spoke to the media and verified Miles’ report. While the passing attack is a work in progress, Miles said he likes what he has seen. “We can improve there pretty quickly and our approach on a couple of throws,” Miles said. “If we do that, we are just where we want to be.”
